Golden Brown & Delicious

The food here was those things and more!

I normally make a point to never get the same thing as whoever I’m eating with but when duck is on the menu, all rules are off. In fact, if I go to any restaurant and duck or lamb is on the menu, it’s probably a safe bet I’m getting one of those two things.

And in this instance, I was not about to pass up duck. So my friend Josh and I both got the exact same thing. And I’m glad we did because after one bite, I knew I probably wouldn’t have wanted to share.

Reppin’ that HPC!

We had seared duck breast over chestnut polenta with roasted fingerling carrots, charred peaches, fennel, and some sort of raspberry relish type thing (it was between a compote and a salsa).

The duck was cooked perfectly. Seared to a crisp but tender and juicy on the inside with loads of meaty flavor without tasting the slightest bit gamey. The chestnut polenta was mild but rich. I actually don’t know that I’ve tasted chestnut a whole lot (outside of whatever chestnut sugar drink Starbucks comes out with at Christmas time) but I’m now a huge fan. It was mellow enough to be a base for the whole dish but still strong enough to be eaten alone and still be just as flavor packed. The fingerling carrots were a subtle, delicious addition to the heavy flavors and it gave the dish an everyday element. The charred peaches took it to a new level with an acidity and sweetness that balanced the richness of the duck and polenta. The fennel gave an herby freshness to the dish and the raspberries complemented that freshness with a summery sweetness to top off the plate.

The atmosphere was laid back and crisp. It was like fine dining without having to wear a black dress and heels. The decor and structure was minimal and clean as if to allow the real influence to be what you’re tasting and not just the splendor and distraction of where you are.

The service was professional and relaxed. The moderate prices were well worth the quality and craftmanship of the food, especially since they are big on using locally sourced ingredients.

Of all the food adventures we went on this summer, this one was probably my favorite. We gave it a 9.5/10 on our own rating scale which is the highest rating we’ve given a place so far!
